Nutritionist vs dietitian. What’s the difference?

All dietitians are nutritionists, not all nutritionists are dietitians.

The main thing that makes dietitians, well, dietitians, is the years of additional medical training. Dietitians need masters degrees in human nutrition; nutritionists don’t.

How can I see you for free?

You know those health insurance premiums you pay? Check your policy for the fine print, but most of them will cover seeing a registered dietitian – that’s us.

Will I have to stop eating chocolate?

Hell no! We can’t imagine ourselves saying no to yum stuff, so we don’t expect you to either. Our strategy is simple: by increasing the quantity and quality of the food you eat there will be so much goodness going in you will hardly have cravings. And when you do choose the chocolate, you’ll enjoy it like never before.

I am afraid of needles - will you ask me to get more blood tests?

Hannah is a freak and loves needles, but we understand if you don’t. Blood test results are helpful so share results from tests you’ve already done. Of course, if you don’t have recent results (recent = last year) we’ll give you a list of ones we would like done – but we’re up for a little negotiation too.

My doctor recommended I see a dietitian. I pick you. What next?

You’ve got a great doctor – give them a high-five. Then, have them email dietitian@ognutrition.co.nz with a brief summary of why they are recommending you. Sending any blood test results is a Brucie bonus.

Will you get me to jump on the scales?

Let’s play a game of would-you-rather.  Would you rather weigh 5kg less OR have more energy, fit your clothes better and see some muscle definition? Us too.

What are your qualifications?

Bragging makes us gag a little bit, so let’s just say we’ve all got a masters degree, are registered with the Dietitians Board, and have undergone several additional months of training in fertility and pregnancy nutrition through a reputable international training program. Eek.

I’m sorry but I’ve got to cancel. How do I do that?

Bummer – we’ll miss you! But, these things happen. Hopefully you’ve given us 48 hours notice. If it’s less than that we’ll have to charge the full fee; the cancellation leaves a gap in our day that someone else could have filled.

What’s your fave part about being a fertility dietitian?

Hands down it’s opening the email where a client tells you they’re pregnant, and you know you’ve had a part to play. Gives me the goosebumps each time.

Deep down I feel like I’m going to be judged for what I eat.

Sharing what we eat with another person can feel like we’re in confession. Here’s the great news: what you eat or don’t eat has zero bearing on how “good” you’ve been, how disciplined you are, or how beautiful you are. May you get sick of hearing us repeating that.

Claiming back the cost has got me confused. How do I do it?

Step 1: Pay the consultation fee

Step 2: Tick “I want a receipt” in the online form

Step 3: Double check your policy, let us know the fine print (i.e. cover value)

Step 4: Check your inbox for the receipt

Step 5: Send to your insurer

Step 6: Bask in the feeling of getting something for free, even though you know it’s an illusion

What is your take on fertility nutrition?

Fertility is a cross between a roulette wheel and a Rubik’s Cube. There’s a lot we can control, but at the end of the day conceiving another human is a gosh darn miracle. We take a holistic approach when coming up with a plan. Rather than just focusing on test tubes and medications, we look at how we can eat well, sleep better, move more, and have more fun; because as science tells us, all these things have a tremendous impact on fertility. Sometimes, when we suss those things everything comes right without pills.
