Master Cycle Tracking for Ovulation Prediction and Period Tracking

December 29, 2024

Your body is constantly sending signals about what’s going on beneath the surface—it’s just a matter of learning how to tune in. Master cycle tracking to understand your fertility and overall health. It’s incredibly empowering—kind of like filing your own taxes. You take control and get clarity on what’s really going on.

When you master cycle tracking, you’re not just counting the days until your next period. You’re pinpointing when you’re most likely to conceive (or avoid pregnancy) and confirming whether ovulation is even happening. If it’s not, that’s your sign to dig a little deeper. Over time, you’ll start to notice patterns that highlight areas to address—irregular cycles, unusual cervical mucus, or short luteal phases, for example. These can all indicate subclinical hormonal imbalances or lifestyle factors that need attention.

My fave part and why I recommend every woman master cycle tracking? To see how changes to your diet, exercise, and self-care are working. Each month becomes a progress report, with healthier cycles showing up as less PMS, stronger ovulations, and a better sense of balance.

Here are two methods I rave about to my clients: The Billings Ovulation Method™ and the Symptothermal Method. Both are scientifically validated, with loads of research behind them. I’ll break them down and help you figure out which one might be a better fit.

The Billings Ovulation Method™ to Master Cycle Tracking

Developed by a Kiwi and a couple of Aussies back in the 1950s, The Billings Ovulation Method™ focuses only on cervical mucus. Extensive research has validated that Peak Day mucus (as defined by The Billings Ovulation Method™ – a term oft’ thrown around by other fertility groups with very different definitions) indicates ovulation has definitely occurred, so when following this method you don’t need to track your basal body temperature to confirm it.

The Billings Ovulation Method™ is the simple, no-fuss way to start tracking your cycle. Instead of relying on gadgets or fancy apps, it focuses entirely on tuning into how your body feels at the vulva and noticing changes in your cervical mucus. These patterns can tell you when ovulation is approaching and when it’s passed. No need to touch mucus or feel around for your cervix—this is the ideal method for those who don’t want to get too hands-on. If the idea of temperature taking doesn’t excite you, this is your method.

It’s also a fantastic option if you’re looking for something that works equally well whether you’re trying to conceive or need a hormone-free contraceptive method. It’s also perfect for those in the throes of postpartum, where you’re up in the night and taking your temperature at the same time every day is impractical.

Cycle Tracking with The Symptothermal Method

For those who enjoy a little extra data, the Symptothermal Method combines cervical mucus tracking with the added step of taking your basal body temperature (BBT) every morning. After ovulation, your temperature will rise slightly and stay elevated until your next period, confirming that ovulation has actually happened.

This method requires a thermometer, but the investment is totally up to you. A basic thermometer works fine, but if you’re into more tech-savvy solutions, devices like TempDrop—a wearable armband that tracks your BBT while you sleep—make the process effortless (and are perfect if you’re not a morning person). It’s a bit more effort, but for some, that added confirmation is worth it.

Are the Two Methods Difficult to Learn?

Both methods take a bit of training to master cycle tracking, and this is where a good educator comes in. A skilled educator will teach you how to recognise your body’s signs, interpret your patterns, and avoid common mistakes. A great educator won’t let you go solo until they’re confident you’ve got it down—and that’s the kind of support you want.

The Billings Ovulation Method™ and Symptothermal educators are available worldwide, so no matter where you are, you can find one online. For those in New Zealand and Australia, I recommend learning through BillingsLife for The Billings Ovulation Method™ or Phase Fertility for Symptothermal. These groups have amazing educators who can guide you step by step.

Common Myths with Cycle Tracking

There are plenty of myths around cycle tracking that can hold people back or create confusion. Let’s clear up a few of the biggest ones:

“It’s too complicated.”

It might feel overwhelming at first, but once you get into the groove, it becomes second nature. Mastering cycle tracking is like learning any new habit—at first, it’s a little extra effort, but then it becomes automatic. Your body’s signals are already there; cycle tracking just helps you pay attention to them. With the right guidance, you’ll be tracking like a pro in no time.

“It’s only for people trying to get pregnant.”

This is a big myth! Cycle tracking isn’t just for those trying to conceive. It’s also great for anyone who wants to understand their body better, whether you’re trying to avoid pregnancy or prefer a natural alternative to hormonal birth control. Knowing when you’re fertile gives you control over your reproductive health, and both The Billings Ovulation Method™ and Symptothermal methods can be used for contraception with high reliability.

“It’s not accurate.”

Both The Billings Ovulation Method™ and Symptothermal methods are actually highly accurate when used correctly. With proper training, they’re over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, and they’re just as reliable for conception. The key is education. When you know what you’re looking for, these methods can be as effective as other forms of contraception or fertility planning.

“Cycle tracking is only for women with ‘normal’ cycles.”

It’s a common misconception that only women with regular cycles can track their fertility. In fact, cycle tracking can be incredibly useful for those with irregular cycles too. It helps you understand your body better, even if your cycle is a little unpredictable. Tracking allows you to spot patterns, so you can work with a fertility expert or dietitian to address any imbalances or challenges.

How to Choose the Right Method to Master Cycle Tracking

The Billings Ovulation Method™ is perfect if you like to keep things simple and straightforward. The Symptothermal Method is for you if you enjoy data and don’t mind adding an extra step (BBT tracking).

Both methods work best when learned with an experienced educator, so be sure to get the support you need to start strong.

The Bigger Picture

Tracking your cycle isn’t just a tool—it’s a form of empowerment. It’s the first step to understanding your body and taking charge of your health and fertility. Whether you’re trying to conceive, manage your cycles naturally, or simply learn more about your body, cycle tracking is a game-changer.

Hey future mama, I’m Hannah. I’m terrified of guns and board games. So as long as you’re not going to hold me at gunpoint to play Settlers of Catan, I think we’ll get on just fine.

Let me give you a bit of background: my husband and I struggled to get pregnant for what felt like an eternity. I cried every bloody time Aunt Flo showed up. I became a fertility nutcase, researching everything I could to (try) control the emotional rollercoaster.

Some really smart people have studied how food & lifestyle impact fertility. It occurred to me I knew a thing or two about nutrition (on the DL – I studied it for eight years in both the USA and NZ, with a masters degree to boot).

Hit fast-forward and I am a mama, with a business of registered dietitians saving women the waiting, disappointment and confusion about getting pregnant. Alongside your doctor, fertility dietitians help you regulate your hormones, get your cycle on track, and get in shape…while eating!

So next time you’re tempted to unfollow that friend for unsolicited baby photos, or punch Aunt Rosa for asking when you’ll have kids, invite us on your fertility journey instead. We’ll help you become a mum with fewer tissues, tampons and torment.
